I was sent by Spain to colonize the western coast of the Americas and I love it! Some of the Indians are resistant to give up all their land and customs, but oh well! LOL!

I never even made it to this Mission. I wanted to be home with my family after the first year of Mission building in San Diego, I left the military side of the Mission project to Pedro Fages. He should be a nice guy, right?

So, these sickness carrying Spaniards are trying to be nice neighbors, and compared to my straw hut the adobe brick keeps me warm but the down side is that when they invited me over for dinner, I ended up staying the rest of my life! I don't even remember my own customs!

When I visited the Mission, I really wondered how the priests spread Christianity when they didn't know the Chumash language. Any ideas?
They used pictures, establishing churches and they taught the Indians more modern skills. The soldiers' wives would teach the Indian women while the men were hunting.

No, the Chumash were very friendly neighbors and worked well with the Mission. However, other tribes mounted a couple of large attacks on the Mission from the Central Valley. The Mission resisted the attack thanks to a warning from a young girl named Pascala.

Were the Chumash Indians used as slaves?
No, the Chumash were eager to learn the ways of the Spanish and made friends easily. They learned many valuable skills like adobe construction, tool making and farming. They even learned Spanish!
